The Seoul High Court will allow broadcasters to air the 2 p.m. November 4 appellate sentencing of former President Yoon Suk-yeol in a case under the Public Official Election Act. Criminal Division 2-1, led by Judge Baek Seung-yeop, approved transmission of court footage. Yoon was convicted at trial over alleged false statements during his 2021 presidential campaign and received an 18-month prison sentence suspended for three years. If the conviction is finalized, his election would be invalidated and the People Power Party could be required to return 39.7 billion Korean won, or nearly $30 million, in reimbursed campaign expenses. Prosecutors have urged the appeals court to uphold the sentence, arguing that Yoon’s statements influenced the election result.
