South Korean banks’ average daily foreign exchange turnover reached a record $122.01 billion in the third quarter, the Bank of Korea said in a report issued on the 30th. The figure rose $570 million, or 0.5%, from the previous quarter’s $121.44 billion, although growth slowed as won volatility narrowed and foreign investors traded fewer Korean securities. Spot turnover fell 6.2% to $50.74 billion, including a 6.6% decline in won-dollar transactions to $40.83 billion. Derivatives turnover increased 5.9% to $71.26 billion, led by foreign exchange swaps, which climbed 7.3% to $45.11 billion, and forwards, which rose 5.1% to $24.21 billion. The won-dollar rate’s average daily change narrowed to 0.46% from 0.52%, while foreign investors’ securities trading averaged 1,154 trillion won a month, down 10.2% from 1,285 trillion won in the previous quarter; the third-quarter securities figure covers results through August. Exports and imports averaged $173.9 billion a month, up 12.4% from the previous quarter.
