Taiwan stocks faced broad selling pressure on Oct. 30, with the Taiwan Weighted Index falling more than 1,600 points intraday before closing down 1,156.50 points, or 2.49%, at 45,211.83. The index briefly reached 44,726.26 and broke below 46,000 and 45,000 within half an hour, though it narrowly held the 45,000-point level by the close. The selloff followed disappointing technology earnings and intensified concerns that artificial-intelligence capital spending is overheating. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing fell NT$55 in intraday trading. Trading value reached NT$517, while the Taiwan dollar opened at NT$32.52 against the U.S. dollar, down 2.8 cents, before its decline rapidly widened as pressure spread through the currency market.
