Gmarket reported suspected personal information leakage to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) after finding that some customers’ mobile gift-certificate PINs had been registered and used without authorization. The company said it blocked unauthorized external access routes, completed emergency security measures and is assessing the scope of the damage. The number of identified damage cases rose from single digits, while the total remains unconfirmed. The report followed online claims that Cultureland gift certificates stored on Gmarket had been used between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. without authorization, although no direct link between those claims and Gmarket’s findings has been established. Gmarket said it would compensate customers confirmed to have suffered losses and publish a customer notice. The incident emerged before Big Smile Day, Gmarket’s largest annual discount event, while similar e-coupon and mobile gift-certificate data incidents have recently been reported at Gifticon and Giftiel.
