Toyota Motor and Alphabet’s Waymo will begin testing autonomous electric vehicles in Japan in 2027, starting with a small number of Toyota bZ4X vehicles. Toyota will build the vehicles at its Takaoka plant in central Japan, where Waymo’s autonomous-driving hardware will be installed. Waymo is also planning a 2027 pilot using Jaguar I-PACE vehicles in Japan. The companies said they would begin with right-hand-drive markets in Japan and Britain, while leaving the timing and locations of any further expansion undisclosed. The project follows an April 2025 agreement to explore developing a new autonomous-vehicle platform, with the longer-term goal of scaling Waymo’s technology into commercial operations.
