Block is expanding Cash App beyond payments and cryptocurrency into a broader financial-services platform for modern earners, including gig workers and consumers who have historically struggled to access traditional banking. Monthly active transacting accounts roughly quadrupled between 2018 and 2024, supported in part by pandemic-era social media campaigns and promotions, while 9.4 million users now rely on Cash App as their primary banking service, up 17% year on year. The growth has brought increased scrutiny from state and federal agencies over allegations that criminals used the platform for scams, drug transactions, fraud, identity theft, money laundering and other illicit activities. Block doubled its legal reserve for a possible U.S. Department of Justice settlement to $526 million in August, with negotiations still underway. Cash App is adding personal loans, buy-now-pay-later options, stock and Bitcoin trading, savings accounts, high-yield savings, merchant rewards, ETFs and customized debit cards. In September, Block applied to the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish Builders Bank & Trust, N.A., an uninsured national trust bank that would provide custody and related fiduciary services for digital assets including Bitcoin and stablecoins, subject to regulatory approval.
