MDA Space has entered an authorization-to-proceed agreement valued at more than $100 million with Thales Alenia Space to begin work on broadband digital phased-array antennas and digital antenna controllers for 66 Layer 1 IRIS² satellites in low Earth orbit. IRIS², the EU Secure Connectivity Programme, is intended to support Europe’s autonomous and sovereign space capability. MDA AURORA direct-radiating arrays will provide digital beamforming capabilities for the constellation. The satellites are scheduled for launch in 2029, and the authorization is expected to enter MDA Space’s backlog in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. The definitive contract covering MDA Space’s full scope remains subject to finalization.
