German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help reduce Germany’s trade deficit with China, which stood at almost €90 billion ($100 billion) last year. During talks in Beijing on the final day of Steinmeier’s four-day state visit, he called for close economic relations that deliver sustainable benefits to both countries and said trade disputes could be addressed through dialogue. Steinmeier also appealed to Xi to help preserve a rules-based international order, citing conflicts and crises in the Near and Middle East, Sudan and Ukraine. Xi has urged Germany to pursue a rational, pragmatic and friendly China policy and called for closer China-EU cooperation, saying equal dialogue can help resolve differences. China remains Germany’s largest trading partner, while both sides highlighted the countries’ economic and technological ties.
