Circle has expanded its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) beyond USDC, allowing any token issuer to connect existing ERC-20 assets or launch new CCTP-compatible tokens across supported EVM chains. The protocol uses a burn-and-mint model that destroys tokens on the source chain and mints equivalent amounts on the destination chain. Issuers retain control over ownership, operators, pause permissions, rate limits and per-transfer caps, while Circle cannot control those settings. Circle's documentation says non-USDC CCTP launched in September 2026 and supports Ethereum, Avalanche, OP Mainnet, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon PoS and Arc, excluding non-EVM networks such as Solana. The company also published a technical guide for implementing the feature on the Arc blockchain testnet, pointing to broader infrastructure for multichain token interoperability.
