Germany and France are preparing for another weekend of protests that will coincide with Halloween, with youth-led demonstrations in Germany focused on living costs, underfunded schools and universities, environmental concerns and a possible return of mandatory military service. About 150,000 people have registered for protests in roughly 30 German cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich, while extra police have been deployed nationwide and luxury stores on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm have boarded up windows. The movement, known as Gen Z regelt or “Gen Z has got this!”, says it wants peaceful demonstrations and has told participants to keep their faces visible, including in costumes. France faces a separate nationwide mobilization after weeks of student-led protests, rioting and looting, with 70,000 officers deployed and demonstrations restricted outside town centers. At least 400,000 people protested across France in the latest wave, including 110,000 in Paris, while authorities reported at least 1,000 detentions. The Yellow Vests have called a further nationwide protest, and students, unions and radical groups are expected to add pressure ahead of a November 5 strike over the cost of living.
