OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman met SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won for lunch on Oct. 31 to discuss cooperation in artificial intelligence, during the same South Korea visit in which he met Samsung executives. Industry insiders said the SK talks may have focused on high-bandwidth memory supplies and next-generation AI infrastructure, although no specific agreements were disclosed. Chey was joined by executives from SK hynix and SK Telecom, according to the existing account. SK Group is a key partner in OpenAI’s large-scale Stargate AI infrastructure project, underscoring the deepening ties between the Korean conglomerate and OpenAI. Altman also addressed about 50 Samsung executives from technology, financial and biotechnology affiliates at a leadership seminar in Yongin, where he discussed AI’s effects on decision-making, operations, future applications and business opportunities. The meetings came as data-center demand intensifies competition for memory supplies, pushes chip prices higher and contributes to plans by the five largest AI-infrastructure players to spend more than US$3 trillion (S$3.8 trillion) in coming years.
