Unionized workers at South Korean steelmaker POSCO will vote Saturday on a tentative wage agreement reached with management after 30 rounds of negotiations since June and two partial strikes in September. The proposed deal includes a 2.6% increase in base pay, a one-off payment of 6 million won (US$4,500) and improved benefits. The vote follows the union's warning last week that it would begin an indefinite strike on Nov. 2 without an acceptable offer. Workers had initially sought a 7.1% base-pay increase, a performance bonus worth 600% of base pay, 50 company shares per worker and a holiday bonus equal to 200% of base pay. The union also cited staffing shortages and aging facilities as factors that could increase workplace-accident risks.
