South Korea's National Tax Service announced ex officio refunds totaling 2.1 billion Korean won, or approximately $1.6 million, for 4,687 taxpayers who overpaid capital gains tax on domestic and foreign stock sales between 2021 and 2025. The overpayments resulted from taxpayers omitting the basic deduction of up to 2.5 million won in annual stock gains from their filings. The average refund is about 450,000 won, or approximately $340, while the largest individual payment is 790,000 won. The NTS identified eligible taxpayers through computer records and processed the refunds without requiring separate correction requests. Taxpayers will be notified by mobile message or mail and can check the payments through Home Tax or the Hand Tax mobile app. The agency warned that it does not request banking passwords, card numbers, internet banking details or transfers to outside accounts, cautioning taxpayers about voice-phishing scams.
