Binance users moved funds into self-custody wallets after the exchange repaired a hack that hackers used to steal approximately $6.3 billion, Binance co-founder CZ said in an interview. Some users withdrew because of institutional policies or security concerns, but most of the funds did not move to other centralized exchanges. Bitquery data nevertheless showed higher deposit activity at Bybit, Bitget and OKX during Binance’s nearly three-day withdrawal suspension. Bybit’s Ethereum depositing addresses rose 142% to 31,539 between Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, while Ethereum stablecoin deposits increased to approximately $239 million from $95 million. Bybit’s TRON depositing addresses climbed 71% to 68,192, and its median Ethereum deposit fell to about one-third of the earlier level. Bitget’s TRON depositing addresses rose 130% to 10,274, while USDT inflows increased to $87 million from $66 million. OKX received $432 million in Ethereum stablecoin deposits, nearly triple the prior week’s $155 million, while its TRON inflows rose to $528 million from $357 million. Coinbase’s Ethereum depositing addresses increased 17% to 12,327, within the normal range identified by Bitquery. The data cannot determine whether Binance customers caused the additional deposits or whether market volatility contributed. Binance’s tracked outgoing transactions fell 99.8% during the interruption before withdrawals reopened across 15 networks and assets on Nov. 1. The exchange reported $4.65 billion in withdrawals and $1.01 billion in deposits during the first nine and a half hours, producing approximately $3.64 billion in net outflows. CZ cautioned that self-custody carries its own risks, including the loss or destruction of a recovery phrase. He said fund flows could remain volatile for weeks or months, although Binance had recorded hourly net inflows within 24 hours of the repair. He also called for greater security investment across the crypto industry, more artificial-intelligence security tools and stronger asset-security practices among retail investors.
