The Seoul High Court upheld former President Yoon Suk Yeol's one-year-six-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, for making false statements before the 2022 presidential election. The court rejected Yoon's reliance on a 2020 Supreme Court ruling that acquitted President Lee Jae Myung, saying that decision concerned spontaneous candidate debates, unlike Yoon's unrestricted questioning at a Kwanhun Club event and a separate interview. It instead applied a 2025 Supreme Court precedent that overturned Lee's acquittal and held that statements must be judged by their overall context and the general impression conveyed to voters. Yoon was convicted over denials involving lawyer Lee Nam-seok, former tax official Yoon Woo-jin, former first lady Kim Keon-hee and shaman Jeon Seong-bae. Yoon's lawyers plan to appeal to the Supreme Court. If the sentence becomes final, the People Power Party must return about 39.7 billion won ($29.6 million) in reimbursed election funds, and Yoon's election will be nullified. The case is among Yoon's multiple criminal proceedings following his failed December 2024 martial-law bid and ouster; a district court sentenced him to life in prison in February for leading an insurrection, and that case is under appeal.
