European shares advanced on Wednesday after Democrats secured control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress, with banks and renewable-energy stocks leading gains. The pan-European STOXX 600 rose 0.5% by 0816 GMT, after previously being reported up 0.3%. Novo Nordisk jumped nearly 6% after reporting better-than-expected third-quarter adjusted operating profit and raising its full-year sales and profit forecasts. The election result could limit President Donald Trump's ability to pursue aggressive trade tariffs and roll back clean-energy subsidies, while leaving uncertainty over future U.S. fiscal support for NATO and Ukrainian defense funding. European technology shares also recovered modestly after steep losses earlier in the week, helped by strong data-center revenue growth and resilient guidance from Advanced Micro Devices. ASML Holding, ASM International, STMicroelectronics, BE Semiconductor and Prosus gained between 0.3% and 2%. Investors were awaiting the euro zone's flash harmonized consumer price index and an appearance by ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane. The inflation data was considered important for the European Central Bank's policy outlook after it held its deposit facility rate at 2.50% the previous week and warned of upside energy risks; faster headline or services inflation could strengthen expectations for a 25-basis-point increase at the Governing Council's December meeting.
