Google expanded its voluntary exit program to employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland in June 2026 as Alphabet seeks to manage rising costs while continuing heavy investment in artificial intelligence. The program offers severance packages; in Switzerland, eligible employees receive one month of salary for each year of service, capped at 12 months. Google Cloud and DeepMind employees, excluded from earlier plans in the United States and Britain, appear to be included in the latest expansion. Google had previously confirmed that some teams introduced voluntary exit programs with severance in 2025 and that the initiative was extended to additional countries in June. The company has not disclosed how many employees accepted the latest offers. The move follows Microsoft’s decision the previous week to offer voluntary departures to approximately 60,000 employees, underscoring the pressure on major technology companies to balance aggressive AI spending with workforce costs.
