Climate change is imposing growing financial and operational costs on British sport, with every organisation surveyed reporting extreme-weather impacts in 2026 and 94% saying the sector is under-prepared. A British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS) report found widespread exposure to heat, drought, storms and flooding, while only nine professional clubs explicitly identified climate or extreme weather as a business risk. Stadium flood risk, postponements and participation losses are affecting both elite and grassroots sport. BASIS called for board-level adaptation plans, better reporting and a £30 million annual fund to protect grassroots facilities.
