Global shipments of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (ESS) reached 779.9 gigawatt-hours in the first nine months of this year, up 73% from 451.5 GWh a year earlier, according to SNE Research. Third-quarter shipments set a record at 286.8 GWh, rising 58% year over year and 7% from the previous quarter, as expanding artificial intelligence data centers increased electricity demand. LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI raised their combined North American share to 20.9% from 13.4%, helped by local production amid tighter U.S. tariffs and supply-chain restrictions on Chinese-made batteries. LG Energy Solution's global shipments rose 355% to 22.1 GWh, while its North American shipments increased 431% to 18.4 GWh. Samsung SDI shipped 12.0 GWh globally and expanded AI data-center shipments 68% to 2.8 GWh, although its North American share declined to 5.8%. China remained the largest national market at 313.1 GWh, while CATL led manufacturers with 198.3 GWh and a 25.4% global share. Grid-scale ESS accounted for 575.9 GWh, or 73.8% of total shipments.
