Hong Kong plans an interbank tokenized gold project representing a standard 400-ounce bullion bar and priced using the city’s HAU gold reference. Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui Ching-yu said at Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2, 2026, that the government would undertake the project very soon under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Project Ensemble. Officials have not disclosed the issuer, custodian, vault location, blockchain, launch date, divisibility or redemption terms, and no retail framework has been announced. The proposal is separate from an Ant Digital Technologies transaction involving tokenized gold and bank deposits, and from Securities and Futures Commission plans to consider a tokenized gold ETF under its Innovation Pathway. The HKMA said its EnsembleTX pilot covers 12 banks and 20 industry participants, with tokenized deposit transactions able to settle around the clock using tokenized central bank money. The SFC has approved 17 tokenized retail products with US$1.3 billion in assets under management, according to Ng Ka-lee.
