The Nova Scotia Supreme Court ordered the return of a laptop containing a Bitcoin wallet to William Sandeson, who is serving a life sentence for murder. Justice John Bodurtha issued the order on Nov. 3 after Sandeson, appearing remotely from a Halifax hearing, pursued a motion filed in April for personal belongings seized following his 2015 arrest. Prosecutors failed to establish that the cryptocurrency was intended for use in a drug transaction, represented criminal proceeds or was otherwise connected to criminal activity. The computer is to be handed to Sandeson's family, while the court did not authorize the return of C$5,000 in cash. The victim's family has separately filed a lawsuit seeking damages from Sandeson.
