Samsung Electronics is facing the formation of a sixth labor union after an application was filed with the labor ministry on Nov. 4. The filing was disclosed the following day by the Samsung Group Supra-Enterprise Labor Union, the company’s largest union, whose membership largely comprises employees in the semiconductor division. It said the proposed organization is being pursued by former and current leaders of the second-largest Samsung Electronics Donghaeng Labor Union. The Donghaeng union represents employees in the Device Experience division, which oversees consumer electronics and mobile businesses. A labor official said disputes between its former and current leadership had intensified, while the Donghaeng union denied any connection between those disputes and the planned union. Samsung Electronics currently has five unions, with the Supra-Enterprise and Donghaeng unions reporting 53,475 and 31,043 members, respectively. The proposed union is expected to focus on Device Experience employees, but its structure and activities have not been confirmed. Existing unions also remain divided over performance-pay criteria, bargaining strategies and preparations for 2027 negotiations.
