Japanese government bond yields fell sharply across the curve on Friday as investors sought sovereign-debt safety after a broad Wall Street selloff led by technology stocks. The 10-year JGB yield dropped to 2.627%, its lowest level since June and its steepest one-day decline since July, while the two-year yield fell to 1.731%, its lowest since September and also its largest daily drop since July. The Nasdaq Composite plunged 5.52% to 24,315.00 points, entering a technical correction after closing more than 10% below its October 6 all-time high. The S&P 500 fell 4.36% to 7,353.73, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 3.44% to 51,523.06. The equity rout reversed the risk-on mood that had lifted global markets earlier in the week, sent the Nikkei 225 down 6.4% and weakened expectations for further near-term Bank of Japan tightening, despite hawkish minutes from the central bank’s September meeting. The technology selloff followed a reassessment of the artificial-intelligence boom after Tuesday’s Democratic sweep of the U.S. Congress, which raised concerns about tougher antitrust enforcement and environmental oversight, including opposition to power-intensive data centers. Earlier declines in crude oil had also eased inflation concerns and expectations for rapid rate increases, while investors continued monitoring developments in the Middle East.
