Democrats plan to make President Donald Trump's 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion in Canadian imports their first major legislative target after taking control of Congress in January. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), the incoming Senate Finance Committee chairman, said support for repeal was overwhelming and that he was already discussing legislation with colleagues. The tariffs, imposed in August under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, prompted Canadian retaliation. Democrats could attract Republican support from trade-dependent states, but their 54 Senate seats fall short of the 60 votes generally needed to overcome a filibuster, while overriding a presidential veto would require two-thirds support in both chambers.
