Paper losses among South Korean retail investors holding U.S. stocks were estimated to exceed 13 trillion won, or approximately $9.6 billion, during a sharp single-day decline in the New York market. The Nasdaq fell 5.52% and the S&P 500 dropped 4.36% overnight, while semiconductor stocks including Micron, NVIDIA and SK Hynix ADR also suffered steep declines. Korean investors had increased their exposure to U.S. equities as domestic markets adjusted, but their holdings were heavily concentrated in semiconductors and big technology rather than broadly diversified. Overseas holdings by these investors totaled $138.782 billion, with semiconductors and big tech/Nasdaq accounting for 73.9%. Analysts recommended diversified, staggered investments and reducing concentration in AI-related stocks.
