Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is considering entering advanced memory chip manufacturing and has begun planning 3D DRAM production at the request of Nvidia, its biggest customer, The Information reported, citing two people with direct knowledge. TSMC is weighing new factories or the acquisition and conversion of an existing plant, although no production timetable has been established. The effort is being led by Hsu Kuo-chin, a vice president overseeing advanced packaging at TSMC. A move into advanced memory would position TSMC against Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron as an AI-driven shortage pushes up prices and prompts chip designers to seek more supply. Nvidia and TSMC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Existing topic reporting also said Nvidia and Apple were seeking additional supply and that Apple had raised device prices earlier this year because of higher memory costs.
