Former FBI counterintelligence agent Patrick Steven Yaroch admitted to wire fraud and money laundering after using access to FBI systems to make about 100 unauthorized cryptocurrency transfers tied to 35 investigations. The transfers generated $2,474,380.66 in proceeds and involved wallets associated with criminal suspects, foreign adversaries and an FBI undercover operation. Yaroch converted and moved the assets through additional cryptocurrency transactions to conceal their source and ownership, used about $93,082 to pay personal debts, and intended to finance a new life in Portugal, where he planned to buy a vineyard. He acknowledged that the theft compromised investigations involving criminal groups and adversarial nations and exposed sensitive intelligence-gathering methods and sources. Authorities initially recovered approximately $925,426 in cryptocurrency, including funds held through Kraken and Suilend, a decentralized lending platform. Yaroch had previously admitted to unauthorized transfers involving about $1 million in digital assets, a matter reported by Cointelegraph in August. He faces up to 20 years in prison, with sentencing set for March 4, 2027.
