Linea Shifts Ethereum Layer-2 Design to RISC-V for Simpler Proving

According to Linea, the Ethereum Layer-2 project is replacing its proving architecture with RISC-V to avoid repeated hard-fork rewrites and simplify execution traces while maintaining Ethereum compatibility.

Summary

In an official announcement, Linea said it will shift its Ethereum Layer-2 architecture to RISC-V. The project stated that Ethereum hard forks currently require full rewrites of constraint modules, while RISC-V offers 32 registers and about 40 instructions with narrower execution traces. Linea said more technical details about the architecture change will be released in the coming weeks.

Terms & Concepts
  • Ethereum Layer-2: A scaling network built on top of Ethereum to increase throughput and reduce costs while relying on Ethereum’s base layer.
  • RISC-V: An open-standard instruction set architecture that uses a relatively small and simple instruction set, which Linea says can simplify proving design.
