A new Senate inquiry adds scrutiny to Trump Mobile after reports of exposed customer data, disputed preorder totals, questions about the T1 phone’s sourcing, and concerns over its deposit and service terms.
Trump Mobile is facing broader scrutiny after reports that customer information was exposed in an online database and leaked order records suggested roughly 30,000 total phone orders from about 10,000 unique customers, far below earlier media estimates of 590,000 preorders. YouTubers Coffeezilla and penguinz0 said a security researcher found their personal information, including mailing and email addresses, in the exposed data, and PCMag reported that Trump Mobile customer support acknowledged the issue and said it was working on a fix. Senator Mark Warner, Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, sent a letter to Trump Mobile CEO Patrick O’Brien questioning the company’s privacy and security practices, the T1 phone’s advertised made-in-America claim, and whether the $499 device is a rebranded model likely manufactured in China. Warner also raised concerns about the company’s preorder terms, which state that deposits do not create a contract for sale and do not guarantee the device will be produced or made available for purchase, as well as the fine print on the $47.45 per month 47 Plan that reduces data speeds after 20GB in a 30-day period.
