According to Blockaid, attackers exploited the Butter Network cross-chain bridge to mint unauthorized MAPO tokens, worsening the market fallout after the breach and deepening concerns over bridge security.
MAP Protocol’s MAPO token fell 96% after an exploit targeting the Butter Network cross-chain bridge allowed attackers to mint a massive amount of unauthorized tokens. According to blockchain security firm Blockaid, the attacker created quadrillion MAPO tokens. Earlier reporting described the minted amount as about 1,000 trillion MAPO, so the exact total remains inconsistently reported across sources. MAP Protocol and Butter Network paused MAPO ERC-20 bridging and ButterSwap during the investigation. The attacker was previously reported to have made about 52.2 ETH, or roughly $110,000, and the incident further underscored the security risks tied to cross-chain infrastructure.
