According to TASS, Russian officials are moving closer to a long-term mining shutdown in Moscow and nearby regions as lawmakers also advance criminal penalties for unregistered miners.
Russian authorities have moved closer to a long-term ban on cryptocurrency mining in Moscow, Moscow Oblast, and nearby areas, with Deputy Energy Minister Evgeniy Grabchak telling TASS that a government commission is considering restrictions that could remain in place until 2032. The push is part of a broader effort to preserve electricity capacity in regions facing grid strain from concentrated mining activity in low-tariff areas. Separately, lawmakers are advancing a bill that would impose criminal penalties on unregistered miners and those using stolen electricity, including fines, forced labor, prison terms, and possible asset confiscation. The measures mark a further tightening of Russia’s mining oversight after the country legalized crypto mining in 2024.
