Lawmakers are pressing Republican committee chairs to examine whether a reported World Liberty Financial investment from the UAE could create conflicts of interest, foreign influence concerns or national security risks.
Five senior Senate Democrats urged Republican committee chairs to immediately hold hearings on a reported $500 million investment by UAE-linked entities in Trump family crypto company World Liberty Financial, intensifying scrutiny of possible conflicts of interest, foreign influence and national security concerns. The lawmakers cited Wall Street Journal reporting that representatives of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan agreed to buy a 49% stake in the company and that $218 million was initially paid, including $187 million to Trump family entities and at least $31 million to companies connected to Steve Witkoff. The senators also pointed to Trump administration actions they said benefited the UAE after the reported deal, including a $1.4 billion arms sale, the rollback of Biden-era AI chip export restrictions that opened the way for G42 to receive 35,000 Nvidia Blackwell processors in a deal worth more than $1 billion, and a Treasury “Known Investor Pilot” program to speed foreign investment reviews through CFIUS. The push comes as Republicans advance the CLARITY Act and some Democrats demand ethics provisions tied to the president’s crypto holdings.
