Qatar said Iranian funds remain restricted under a 2023 humanitarian-use arrangement, despite Iranian statements that assets were being released and reports of possible indirect Iran-U.S. talks in Qatar.
Qatar said the $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds has not been transferred to Iran and remains governed by a 2023 arrangement that limits use to humanitarian purchases, contradicting Iranian statements that the assets were being released. Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported President Pezeshkian said on June 29 that half of $12 billion in Iranian assets held in Qatar would be unfrozen and returned, while a later report said Iran was set to receive $3 billion before the end of the week. Separately, reports said indirect Iran-U.S. talks in Qatar with mediators may address the Strait of Hormuz and regional stability.
