The FBI director said he inadvertently omitted a November 2025 Strategy investment from an earlier ethics filing, prompting scrutiny under the STOCK Act because the Bitcoin-heavy company is also a U.S. government contractor tied to the Justice Department.
FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed a purchase of Strategy stock worth between $100,001 and $250,000 about six months after the November 21, 2025 trade, missing the 45-day reporting deadline required under the STOCK Act. Patel reported the transaction in an amended ethics filing on May 26, 2026, saying he had inadvertently omitted it from an earlier filing. Patel also said “no current conflict exists,” while Deputy Assistant Attorney General William Taylor wrote that he continued to believe Patel was complying with applicable conflict-of-interest laws and regulations. Watchdogs said the filing was plainly late under the statute. Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin and a registered U.S. government contractor that has done millions of dollars of business with the Justice Department, which oversees the FBI. Strategy shares have fallen nearly 48% since Patel’s purchase date.
