Lean Ethereum is framed as a long-term evolution toward a “third-generation Ethereum,” with greater emphasis on post-quantum cryptography and privacy over a gradual three-to-four-year rollout.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said Lean Ethereum is a long-term evolution plan for the network, describing it as a series of protocol overhauls to be implemented gradually over three to four years starting from “I-star.” He said the effort is aimed at a “third-generation Ethereum” that places greater priority on post-quantum cryptography and privacy. Earlier discussions around the roadmap had already highlighted recursive STARK verification, quantum-resistant cryptography, consensus redesign, multidimensional gas and a dual-layer state structure around 2030, underscoring that the plan is a broad architectural redesign rather than a single upgrade.
