Coinbase faces backlash after AI alert falsely reported Norway beat Brazil 3-2

Coinbase drew criticism after an AI-generated alert told users that Norway had beaten Brazil 3-2 before the World Cup match had started, even as the company’s own prediction market page showed the game as delayed. The notification also said Erling Haaland scored twice, and screenshots circulated widely on X, prompting Brian Armstrong to say he was looking into the issue. Max Branzburg, Coinbase’s head of consumer and business products, later said the company had corrected the story and updated its systems to avoid similar inaccuracies. The final result was different from the alert, though Norway ultimately beat Brazil 2-1 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with Haaland scoring twice in the second half. The incident highlights the risks of using AI-generated live-event updates as Coinbase pushes beyond basic cryptocurrency trading into prediction markets and AI-powered products. In January, Coinbase rolled out prediction markets through Kalshi, letting users trade event contracts tied to sports, elections, economic data and other outcomes, while also expanding tools such as AI-powered wallets and agents designed to automate parts of the crypto experience.
