Alatau City Bank’s Crypto Pay setup lets shoppers pay by QR code while merchants receive Kazakhstani tenge, with the service operating inside the National Bank of Kazakhstan’s regulatory sandbox.
Binance Pay has been integrated into about 5,000 point-of-sale terminals operated by Kazakhstan’s Alatau City Bank, allowing shoppers to pay by QR code with digital assets while merchants receive Kazakhstani tenge. Changpeng Zhao, the co-founder and former CEO of Binance, said the setup extends real-world crypto payments through a traditional bank terminal network rather than a standalone app. The system, branded as Crypto Pay within the bank’s acquiring infrastructure, locks the exchange rate at checkout and converts the asset, primarily USDT, into tenge instantly so merchants are not exposed to crypto price swings. A first live demonstration took place on April 24 before the President of Kazakhstan, followed by a full rollout in May and an expansion to roughly 5,000 terminals within about two months. The service is operating within the National Bank of Kazakhstan’s regulatory sandbox, making the rollout a closely watched test of whether regulated bank-linked crypto payments can move beyond a pilot framework.
