OpenAI launches GPT-5.6 tiers with Sol priced at $5/$30 per million tokens

OpenAI is expanding GPT-5.6 across ChatGPT, Codex and its API with a three-tier lineup led by Sol, alongside Terra and Luna. The global release went live on July 9, 2026, after a limited preview that began on June 26 and was restricted to U.S. government-approved trusted partners. Sol is positioned as the flagship model for advanced coding, scientific research and cybersecurity applications. Terra is aimed at users seeking performance comparable to the previous GPT-5.5 generation at about half the cost, while Luna is designed for high-throughput routine tasks where speed and affordability matter more than top-end capability. The API pricing starts at $5 per 1 million input tokens and $30 per 1 million output tokens for Sol, compared with $2.50 and $15 for Terra, and $1 and $6 for Luna. OpenAI says the rollout also includes stronger safeguards focused on cybersecurity applications and misuse prevention. The model names have drawn attention in crypto circles because Sol, Terra and Luna closely match names associated with Solana and the original Terra ecosystem. OpenAI has not announced any blockchain connection, and the release includes no indication of a link to digital assets.
