The U.S. Justice Department is investigating allegations that UAW President Shawn Fain abused his position by trying to secure a financial benefit for his fiancée, adding to scrutiny of a union still under court-appointed oversight after its 2020 corruption settlement. People familiar with the matter said a private lawyer serving as the union’s monitor referenced the DOJ investigation in an email last month to Fain and UAW Vice President Rich Boyer, who is running against Fain in an upcoming union election. Bloomberg News had previously reported a grand jury investigation tied to allegations that Fain sought a bonus for his fiancée, pushed for a worker’s compensation claim for her sister and retaliated against Boyer after Boyer refused to approve the benefits. Fain has called the allegations false and said Boyer was trying to influence the election. Steven Fagell of Covington & Burling previously said the UAW broadly is not the subject of a grand jury investigation.
