Webull EU wins MiCAR approval in Netherlands for crypto custody launch

The firm plans a Netherlands rollout before expanding across the EU through passporting, while Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. will handle client trade execution.

Summary

Webull EU said it has received MiCAR approval in the Netherlands, allowing it to begin offering regulated crypto-asset services under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. The company plans to launch first in the Netherlands and later extend the service across the EU through passporting, though that approval is still pending. Client crypto assets will be held by Webull EU in custody, while Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. will execute trades. The company said the authorization from the AFM (Netherlands financial markets regulator) makes it one of the first dual-regulated investment firms in the Netherlands to secure MiCAR approval. Andries van Luijk, CEO of Webull Securities (Europe), called the decision an important milestone in the company’s European expansion and said it would give clients regulated access to digital assets under the bloc’s new framework. Webull said operations are due to begin in late 2026, when European users will be able to place crypto orders through its platform across multiple asset classes. The move comes as firms across Europe race to secure MiCAR authorization after the regulation’s transition period ended on July 1, enabling companies licensed in one member state to offer covered crypto services across the European Economic Area without separate national licences.
