Texas Southern University said its annual economic impact totals $1.6 billion and supports 15,676 jobs across its institutional service area, based on 2023-2024 data in a new economic impact report. The university said alumni working across the region make up more than 80% of that total, contributing $1.3 billion in added income, while other drivers include operations spending, student spending, research activity, visitor spending and construction. President J.W. Crawford III said the findings show the institution’s influence extends beyond the classroom through workforce development, research and partnerships. The report also said students receive $6.90 in higher lifetime earnings for every dollar invested, and that taxpayers and society benefit through higher tax revenues, lower pressure on public services and a more educated workforce. Texas Southern said the findings align with its Ascend 2030 strategic plan and that it will enhance data collection to better measure contributions to economic growth in its service area as it approaches its centennial in 2027.
