A new GSMA report says emissions fell even as mobile connections rose 10% and data traffic more than quadrupled, with faster access to renewable power seen as key to reaching net zero by 2050.
Mobile network operators reduced operational emissions by 13% between 2019 and 2024, including a 5% decline in 2024 alone, even as mobile connections increased by 10% and data traffic more than quadrupled, the GSMA said in its Mobile Net Zero 2026: State of the Industry on Climate Action report. The industry body said renewable energy remains the main driver of emissions cuts, with operators purchasing or generating around 70 TWh of renewable electricity in 2024 and lifting the share of electricity sourced from renewables beyond the grid mix from 10% in 2019 to 24%. The report, based on data from more than 110 operators representing 85% of global mobile connections, said wider access to renewable energy, especially in emerging markets, will be critical if the sector is to stay on track for net zero by 2050. John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer at the GSMA, said the industry has shown digital growth and climate action can advance together, while urging policymakers to support investment in clean energy infrastructure and faster deployment.
