The Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation is being framed by members as an effort to avoid the closed ecosystems that shaped the early web, as the group pushes an open payment standard for AI-driven commerce. The x402 protocol, originally developed by Coinbase and now stewarded by the foundation, is designed to let AI agents, machines and users transact over HTTP without subscriptions or manual card entry, potentially supporting both larger purchases and micropayments. Denelle Dixon, CEO of Stellar Development Foundation, said open standards matter because AI agents could account for a large share of future internet commerce and help determine whether payments remain interoperable or become locked inside proprietary systems. The protocol takes its name from the long-unused '402 payment required' HTTP response code, which early web architects created to enable browsers to pay for content but which never gained traction because card fees made micropayments impractical. The foundation's premier members include Ripple, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Fiserv, Shopify, Google, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, Circle, MoonPay, Solana Foundation and Stellar Development Foundation, alongside Coinbase, as the group seeks to turn x402 into a collaborative, vendor-neutral standard for machine-driven internet payments.
