Summary

MetaMask is using its 10th anniversary to push beyond its roots as a self-custodial crypto wallet and into a broader platform for payments, savings, investing and digital assets. Consensys appointed Gal Eldar as chief product officer to lead Open Money, an initiative intended to bring those functions into a single self-custodial platform. Founded in 2016 by Kumavis and Dan Finlay, MetaMask started as an Ethereum browser wallet and later expanded to support Bitcoin, Solana and hundreds of blockchain networks. The platform has logged more than 100 million downloads, trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume and availability in about 190 countries, according to the company. MetaMask also said its security systems blocked more than 6.5 million visits to malicious websites and stopped nearly 150,000 malicious transactions during 2025, helping users avoid more than $500 million in estimated losses. The company is also developing an Agent Wallet aimed at letting artificial intelligence agents interact with decentralized finance applications while applying security checks to transactions.
