
Huawei says Europe’s shift toward grid-forming storage and ancillary services supports its broader Smart PV strategy, as it repositions LUTERRA for a higher-renewables power system.
Huawei is broadening the positioning of its LUTERRA battery energy storage platform as European power systems adapt to higher renewable penetration and place more emphasis on grid-forming capability, integrated energy solutions and ancillary services. Speaking at The Smarter E 2026 in Munich, Steven Zhou, President of Smart PV & ESS Product Line, Huawei Digital Power, said wind and solar penetration in Europe is expected to reach 64% by 2030, increasing pressure on grid resilience and system strength as traditional synchronous generation declines. Zhou said European markets are responding with higher grid investment, wider deployment of grid-forming BESS, new grid codes that include grid-forming requirements and a shift in power markets from simple energy arbitrage toward diversified ancillary services. He said future PV and BESS products must evolve into primary power sources, and announced that Huawei has upgraded the LUNA brand to LUTERRA as the company redefines storage from serving nighttime demand to supporting overall grid stability. The company linked that strategy to its Smart PV approach and its integration of 4T technologies — Bit, Watt, Heat and Battery — across utility-scale and commercial and industrial applications. Zhou highlighted European C&I projects using Huawei’s integrated PV, BESS, EV charging and AI scheduling platform, saying Germany’s AHS business park increased revenue by 10% after two years of operation and a Carrefour supermarket in Spain cut its electricity bill by almost 40% with a five-year payback period. The update adds strategic and market context to Huawei’s earlier launch of LUTERRA, which the company has presented as a grid-forming Smart String ESS platform designed to simplify deployment while supporting utility-scale renewable plants and other storage applications.
