The $325 million purchase would give Hyundai-affiliated shareholders 100% of Boston Dynamics, a step that could speed an IPO and deepen Atlas deployment at Georgia factories.
Hyundai Motor Group said it will acquire SoftBank Group’s remaining Boston Dynamics stake for $325 million, giving Hyundai-affiliated shareholders full ownership of the U.S. robotics company. SoftBank exercised its put option earlier this month under terms tied to Hyundai’s 2021 acquisition, after the companies had agreed in June 2025 to delay the exercise by one year and add a call option for Hyundai. As of the end of 2025, HMG Global held 56.24% of Boston Dynamics, while Hyundai Glovis and Chairman Euisun Chung owned 11.25% and 22.5%, respectively, and SoftBank held about 9%. The deal has intensified expectations for a U.S. IPO or a pre-IPO stake sale, with Google and Nvidia cited by industry officials as potential strategic investors. Hyundai also plans to deploy the humanoid robot Atlas in stages at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America and Kia’s Georgia plant, with industry officials expecting an IPO after broader humanoid mass production and factory deployment begin in 2028.
