An AWS CloudFront failure tied to VPC Origins briefly cut off access to Morpho’s app and API, while the protocol’s onchain lending contracts continued operating and performance risks lingered after service returned.
Morpho restored its web app and API after a partial outage it blamed on an Amazon CloudFront failure that left borrowers and lenders unable to reach app.morpho.org and api.morpho.org for several hours. Principal engineer Julien Thomas said all Morpho services were back and stable, though performance could remain affected. AWS said CloudFront customers using VPC Origins experienced 5xx errors between 12:45 AM and 4:18 AM PDT after a system that pushes routing configuration to network processors stopped loading updated data correctly once the fleet handling connections to private VPC origins hit an internal capacity limit. The disruption hit Morpho’s hosted interface rather than its onchain lending contracts, underscoring how decentralized finance applications can still depend on centralized web infrastructure even when blockchain-based systems remain operational. Morpho said in June, when it raised $175 million in a round co-led by Paradigm, a16z crypto, and Ribbit, that it had more than $11 billion in deposits, while DeFiLlama currently lists about $7.33 billion in total value locked mainly across Ethereum and Base. Other services affected by the AWS issue included Hugging Face, the UK’s National Lottery, Fallout 76 and tradesea, and the incident follows another AWS-linked disruption that sent Coinbase dark in May.
