Cobie says Coinbase will align trading products more closely with onchain users

Cobie said he now oversees Coinbase trading products across the Coinbase app, Advanced trading and Base App, and that the company is trying to close a trust gap with crypto-native users after operating too much like an “ivory tower.” In exchanges on X on July 18, he distinguished his role running the Base consumer app and Coinbase trading products from the Base chain itself, which remains under Jesse Pollak. The discussion followed a difficult stretch for Base and Coinbase leadership. Pollak said on July 16 that he was handing the consumer app to Cobie so he could focus on Base, and later described the quarter as “a punch in the face” while outlining a strategy centered on trading, payments and AI agents after acknowledging Base had not succeeded in social apps. Brian Armstrong, the chief executive officer of Coinbase, also said on July 13 that the company had “messed up” on Base’s “content coins” effort and had already shifted focus away from that strategy earlier in the year. The dispute matters beyond social media because Base has become a significant piece of crypto infrastructure. Coinbase said in its Q1 2026 shareholder letter that Base handled 62% of global on-chain stablecoin transaction volume, more than all other blockchains combined, and over 90% of global on-chain stablecoin volume for agentic stablecoins, while stablecoin trading volume on Base rose tenfold from a year earlier.
