CNN linked Trump’s stock purchases and later company praise to renewed ethics concerns, while a new Truth Social data product and his non-blind trust structure add to conflict-of-interest scrutiny.
Donald Trump bought stock in 21 companies within a week before posting favorable messages about them on Truth Social, CNN reported after reviewing his 2025 financial disclosure, which listed more than 21,000 transactions. The network said he made at least 44 such purchases and highlighted Nvidia as one example: Trump bought between $200,000 and $500,000 of the chipmaker’s shares in April, then days later promoted Nvidia’s plans to build artificial intelligence supercomputers in the United States and pledged on April 15 to expedite permits for Nvidia and similar firms. CNN also found 17 purchases of eight companies before he later criticized them, including Comcast and Microsoft. The report said most of Trump’s trades had no matching Truth Social activity and found no evidence he used posts to lift his own holdings. The White House said his assets are held in fully discretionary accounts managed by independent institutions, but the findings have sharpened ethics questions because Trump uses a trust with Donald Trump Jr. as trustee rather than a blind trust. Scrutiny is also growing as Trump Media plans to launch its Truth API on August 1, offering paying firms faster access to top Truth Social posts and raising further questions about whether presidential statements could create financial advantages for businesses tied to his family.
