HSBC has cleared Gate 2 in the UK’s Digital Securities Sandbox, allowing Orion to operate as a digital securities depository ahead of the planned DIGIT gilt pilot expected by the first quarter of 2027.
HSBC has become the first institution approved by the Bank of England to go live in the UK’s Digital Securities Sandbox, clearing its Orion platform to operate as a Digital Securities Depository for digitally native bonds. The approval means Orion can handle issuance, servicing and settlement in the UK’s live testing regime for distributed ledger-based securities infrastructure. HSBC had previously passed Gate 1 in July 2025 and has now cleared Gate 2, the stage that allows real transactions to be processed. The bank was selected by HM Treasury in February 2026 as platform provider for the UK’s Digital Gilt Instrument, or DIGIT, pilot, which is expected to launch by the first quarter of 2027. HSBC says Orion has already facilitated more than $5 billion in digital bond issuances globally. The sandbox runs until January 2029 and is part of the UK’s broader effort to test whether tokenized market infrastructure can improve the issuance and post-trade handling of sovereign and corporate debt.
